President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo accompanied by First Lady Ibu Iriana inaugurated Tanju Dam in Dompu Regency, Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Monday (30/7) afternoon.

In his remarks, the President said that the key of development in NTB is water. “If there is no water in Dompu, what plants can be planted here? the President said while adding that Indonesia only has 231 reservoirs or dams, whereas the United States has 6,100 dams, China has 110,000 dams and Japan has 3,000 dams. It means Indonesia lacks a lot of reservoirs and dams. In NTB, there are five dams that will be developed.

According to the President, the newly inaugurated Tanju Dam has a capacity of 18 million cubic meters and it is able to irrigate 2,250 hectares of land. “This dam is huge,” he further said. The presence of this dam is expected to rapidly increase agricultural productivity.

Also attending the inauguration were Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko, and Governor of West Nusa Tenggara TGB Zainul Majdi. (DNS/ES) (MMB/YM/Naster)
