As part of his working visit to North Sumatra province, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Thursday (02/09) inaugurated two Type-A passenger terminals, namely Amplas terminal in North Sumatra provincial capital Medan and Tanjung Pinggir terminal in the neighboring town of Pematang Siantar.

“I hope the construction of Amplas terminal of Medan and Tanjung Pinggir terminal of Pematang Siantar can foster a habit of travelling by bus transportation,” President Jokowi said during the inauguration of Amplas terminal.

The President also expressed hope that the terminals can provide the best services to the people.

“Please do not repeat the same mistakes of old bus terminals which were dirty and full of hoodlums. No one wants to embark on the bus when such things are still happening,” he said, adding that Amplas terminal serves intra-city, inter-city, and inter-provincial transportation.

The Head of State also pointed out that public transportation in a number of major cities such as Jakarta, Medan, Bandung, Surabaya, and Makassar must be developed so that the dependence on private vehicle can be reduced and traffic jams and congestions can be eased.

“In Jakarta, we already started with MRT and LRT will soon be finished. The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail is also expected to be completed soon. I hope other major cities can also prepare to develop LRT, MRT, and other modes of public transportation,” he remarked.

For the record, the revitalization of Amplas terminal was financed by the National Sharia Bond (SBSN) amounting of Rp43 billion.

The revitalization of newly-inaugurated were carried out in three years—starting from 2020 to 2022—and focuses on the mix-use terminal concept which integrates with economic centers, such as malls and hotels.

The terminal also implements an electronic ticket purchasing system. (RSF/UN) (GWH/HD/EP)
