President Jokowi inspects Depapre Seaport, in Sentani, Papua, on Saturday (30/4)

At the end of his working visit to Papua, President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo on Saturday (30/4) inspected Depapre Seaport in Sentani.

The construction of Depapre Container Port has just begun. Governor of Papua, regents in the Province, and Minister of State-owned Enterprises have agreed that the construction of the Port will be carried out by State-owned Enterprises (BUMN), provincial administration-owned Enterprises (BUMD), state-owned port operator (Pelindo), and BUMD in Papua Province,” President Jokowi said.

The synergy among BUMN and BUMD, the President added, will accelerate the construction of the port.

President Jokowi went on to say that after the construction is finished, an industrial zone, located around 20 km from the port, will be established, so that the port and the industrial zone will be integrated.

Considering the port is located in the inner part of the Papua Province, export commodities are expected to be sent directly to the destination countries without having to go through Makassar or Surabaya first,” the President said.

The Depapre Seaport, the President added, will become a major port that is connected to and become a hub to medium and small seaports.

“There will be two major ports: Depapre Seaport and Sorong Seaport,” the President said.

During the visit, the President was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of Trade Thomas Lembong, Minister of State-owned Enterprises Rini Soemarno, Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) Commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo, Chief of Indonesian National Police (Polri) Gen. Badrodin Haiti, and Governor of Papua Lukas Enembe. (BPMI/UN) (RAS/EP/YM/Naster)
