President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and several Cabinet Ministers enjoyed a trial run of Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) from Hotel Indonesia Station to Lebak Bulus Station in Jakarta, Tuesday (19/3).

“We are pleased that the MRT is welcomed with enthusiasm, we hope that in the future everyone uses the MRT. This is a new habit that we must begin to get used to,” the President said, adding that he also invited those who use private cars or motorbikes to switch their mode of transportation to the MRT.

“After the 230-km line of the Jabodetabek (MRT) is completed, the Jakarta Governor will apply Electronic Road Pricing to force car owners to use this mode of transportation,” President Jokowi explained.

He went on to say that the MRT tariff will be decided by the Governor and Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta (DKI Jakarta). The President also expressed hope that the tariff will be decided before the inauguration of the MRT. “The Public Service Obligation (Cost) will be covered by the Regional Government of DKI Jakarta,” the President said.

For the record, President Jokowi will officially inaugurate the operation of the Jakarta MRT on Sunday (24/3), while the commercial operation will start on 1 April.

Sumadi, Minister of Manpower Hanif Dhakiri, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning Sofyan Djalil, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of Communication and Informatics Rudiantara, Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan and Speaker of Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) of DKI Jakarta Prasetio Edi Marsudi.
