President Jokowi is the Second President to Visit Pagar Alam after President Soekarno

The working visit to Pagar Alam, South Sumatra Province, on Monday (01/24), has left a special impression on President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. President Jokowi becomes the second Indonesian President who has paid a visit to the city after President Soekarno in 1952.

“This afternoon, I am really happy to be in Pagar Alam City where 70 years ago Bung Karno (President Soekarno) had paid a visit to the city in 1952, here, at the same spot, alhamdulillah,” President Jokowi said in Merdeka Square, Pagar Alam City.

The Head of State’s visit to Pagar Alam has also made a deep impression on the people who gave a warm welcome. Moreover, Governor of South Sumatra, Herman Deru, mentioned that the visit of President Jokowi is very much welcomed by the people.

Bapak (the President) is very much welcomed here in Pagar Alam City. We have been waiting for this moment for so long because President (Soekarno) used to visit the city at the same spot 70 years ago in 1952. The wait is over since Bapak is here now. The people are really enthusiastic welcoming Bapak since Bapak arrived at Atung Busung Airport,” Herman said.

Herman expressed hope that President Jokowi would feel comfortable while staying in the city with fresh air. Additionally, Pagar Alam City is also known for its nice people and as a historic city.

“A historic city that has made its people proud because so many generals were born here and it has good work ethics,” Herman added.

During his working visit in Pagar Alam City, President Jokowi expressed his appreciation to the local government for the efforts to make Pagar Alam City a green energy city. Furthermore, President Jokowi also had an opportunity to visit Dempo Permai Market to directly distribute cash assistance to the merchants.
