President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo said the Government would ensure that low-cost apartment blocks (rusunami) provided for low-income people reach the right targets, namely workers and labors.

“We are collaborating with leaders of workers union to monitor the sale. The price of these low-cost apartments is low because of the subsidy. The down payment is also low. We must ensure that those who purchase them are workers and labors,” the President told reporters after the groundbreaking ceremony of the development of low-cost apartment block for low-income people in Urbantown-Lifvilles Serpong, South Tangerang, Banten, Thursday (27/4).

The President added another reason the Government collaborate with leaders of workers union such as Abdul Gani Nuwawe, Yoris Raweyai, and Mudokhir in selecting prospective buyers of the apartments is to ensure that once the construction of those low-cost apartments is finished, the apartments will be owned by the targeted buyers, namely workers and labors.

For the record, the Government is building 9,000 low-cost apartment units in Serpong, sold at around Rp293 million. The down payment for the apartment is also very low, which is only 1 percent, while the monthly installment is Rp1.2 million.

President Jokowi explained that after building low-cost apartments in Serpong, the Government next week would also build low-cost apartments in Depok sold at a lower price, which is Rp112 million.

As for the funds to build those low-cost apartments, President Jokowi said they are taken from the budgets of the Social Security Provider Body for Employment (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing. (FID/JAY/ES) (EP/YM/Naster)
