President Jokowi: Mainstream Media Must Uphold Truth
Mainstream media platforms should play pivotal roles in providing verified news and voicing hope for the society amid rapid flow of information spread through various digital media platforms and social media, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said.
“It is also crucial for mainstream media platforms to serve as a clearinghouse of information,” the President said during the 2023 National Press Day (HPN) commemoration at the multipurpose building of North Sumatra Provincial Government, Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra province, Thursday (02/09).
According to the President, the role of media has been increasingly important to amplify the truth and uncover facts in a post-truth world.
“Mainstream media is expected to maintain its mission to find the truth and build optimism,” he said.
On that occasion, the President urged all parties, both central and regional government agencies, state-owned enterprises (BUMN), private companies, and non-governmental organizations, to support mainstream media since they cannot work alone.
“To exist sustainably, the mainstream media must come up with innovations, be adaptive to technology, and take strategic measures. However, the mass media should not be left alone. The Government and all stakeholders must provide support,” he added.
The Head of State also appealed to the mass media to stick to idealism, be objective, and not slip into polarization ahead of political year.
The media must also encourage the implementation of the 2024 election to run honestly, fairly, and able to strengthen Indonesia’s unity.
“The mass media must remain the fourth pillar of democracy and the main reference for the public in obtaining information,” the President remarked. (RSF/UN) (RIF/HD/MMB)
