President Jokowi Meets Myanmar’s New President

On the sidelines of the 32nd ASEAN Summit, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Friday (27/4) at the Bilateral Room 1, Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore, held a bilateral meeting with President of the Republic of Myanmar Win Myint.

The meeting was also an introductory meeting of the newly elected President of Myanmar.

During the meeting, President Jokowi appreciated good relations between the two countries that have been established for a long time.

“I hope this friendship can bring goodness for our societies, the region and the world,” the President said.

On that occasion, President Jokowi also expresses his concern over the humanitarian situation at Rakhine State and its impact on Cox’s Bazar.

“There is only one interest for Indonesia, namely to see a stable and peaceful Rakhine State where its people, including Muslims, can live in peace,” the President said.

President Jokowi also affirmed Indonesia’s readiness to continue to support Myanmar, especially related to repatriation of refugees from Cox’s Bazar to Rakhine State voluntarily, safely and in respectable manners.

Indonesia also encourages the implementation of Kofi Annan’s recommendations, the President said.

At the beginning of the meeting President Jokowi also invited his Burmese counterpart to attend ASEAN Leaders Gathering in Bali on 11 October 2018. The event, President Jokowi said, is intended to demonstrate a solid partnership and ASEAN leadership in managing economic growth to create better prosperity, equity and achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.

Also accompanied the President on the meeting were Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Darmin Nasution, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, Minister of Trade Enggartiasto Lukita, Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko, Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore I Gede Ngurah Swajaya.
