President Jokowi meets President of the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium (21/4)

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Thursday (21/4), at the office of the President of the European Parliament, Brussels, met the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz in Brussels.

Schulz told the President that Indonesia is a very important partner for the European Union (EU). He also supported the progress of the discussion on Scoping Papers and hopes the negotiation on CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) will be started soon.

Ari Dwipayana from Presidential Communication Team in a press release on Thursday (21/4) said that Schulz appreciated Indonesia’s role in keeping world peace, including on the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Meanwhile, President Jokowi explained about Indonesia’s political and democratic development. The President said that as a country with the largest Muslim population, Indonesia is able to promote democracy and tolerance. “These values are really important to be promoted around the world, because it is crucial for the world peace,” President Jokowi said.

Responding to the invitation from the President of the European Parliament, Indonesia will send key figures of interreligious dialogue to participate in the event held by the European Parliament.

President Jokowi also hopes that Indonesian CPO (Crude Palm Oil) will be treated fairly. The President said the issue of sustainability is Indonesia’s priority.

President Jokowi and President Schulz have agreed on the importance to enhance the cooperation between parliaments of Indonesia and the EU. President Jokowi was delighted to hear about a plan to establish Indonesia – European Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Both leaders also have agreed that it is important to enhance the cooperation between the EU and ASEAN.

In the event, President Jokowi was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Darmin Nasution, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Minister of Trade Thomas Lembong, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi.(UN/EN) (RAS/AW/YM/Naster)
