President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo received a visit from the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) Armida Alisjahbana.

“This is the first formal meeting between Mrs. Armida Alisjahbana and the President. She is an Indonesian who occupies the highest position in the UN system,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi told reporters after the meeting, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Thursday (27/2).

On the occasion, Armida invited President Jokowi to attend the 76th session of the Commission in Bangkok, this May.

“It’s because the session will address the issues of the ocean. As an archipelagic country, a maritime country, Indonesia can share various information about ocean issues in light of climate change issues,” Retno said.

President Jokowi and the Executive Secretary also discuss the issue of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the UN-ESCAP also requested Indonesia to cover issues related to SDGs.

“We also discuss possible cooperation including cooperation with South Pacific countries on the ocean issues,” Retno concluded. (MAY/EN)
