Ahead of this year’s Eid, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Wednesday (04/05) monitored availability and prices of staple food at Rawamangun traditional market in East Jakarta and Johar Baru traditional market in Central Jakarta.

“Ahead of Eid, Minister of Trade and I wanted to monitor the stock and the price,” he said, adding that supply of staple food in the two markets is sufficient although prices of a number of commodities have dropped.

“[Prices of] egg, chicken, rice, and shallot have dropped, while meat price has increased,” he said adding, that the drop is in line with the observation from Statistics Indonesia (BPS).

The BPS, the President added, has recorded a deflation that will be beneficial since the prices of goods declined ahead of Eid.

President Jokowi also expressed hope that the drop in food prices would strengthen people’s purchasing power.

“Prices of many commodities have dropped. This is good as it will increase people’s purchasing power,” he remarked. (TGH/UN) (RAS/EP)
