President Jokowi: New Indonesian Criminal Code to be Big Step in Legal Modernization
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo set forth the progress achieved in the legal sector, namely the enactment of the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP) that is a big step in modernizing legal regulations in Indonesia.
The statement was delivered in his speech at the Annual Session of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) and the 2024 Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR) and the House of Regional Representatives (DPD), at the Nusantara Building, Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Friday (08/16) morning.
“After 79 years of independence, we finally have a new Criminal Code as an effort to modernize Indonesian law,” he said, also adding that the Job Creation Law, which has revised tens of laws and thousands of articles, aims to reduce overlapping regulations and create a more conducive investment climate.
“The Job Creation Law revises 80 laws and 1,200 articles as an effort to deregulate overlapping regulations,” he said.
The Head of State said that Indonesia has the Sexual Violence Crime Law that is essential to provide more comprehensive protection for victims of sexual violence, especially women and children.
“We also have the Sexual Violence Crime Law to provide real and stronger protection, especially for women and children,” he concluded.
Those new laws are part of ongoing efforts to improve the legal system and create a fairer and safer environment. It is hoped that those new laws will have a positive impact on the society and encourage legal progress in Indonesia. (KS/MAY/TGH/FID/DNS) (TM/MMB)
