President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, on Friday (26/3), ensured that the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) will absorb rice from the farmers following the issue of rice imports.

“I will immediately order Minister of Finance to help with the budget,” President Jokowi said in a statement at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.

Addressing the issue of rice imports circulating in the public, the President affirmed that no imported rice will enter  Indonesia until June 2021.In fact, the country has not imported rice during the past three years.

“There is indeed a Memorandum of Understanding with Thailand and Vietnam, but it only serves as a backup plan given the pandemic has caused many uncertainties. Nevertheless, no imported rice has entered the country,” he added.

The President also urged all sides to end the debate related to rice imports since it may cause farm-level prices for unhusked rice to drop. Moreover, Indonesia is entering the harvest season and farm-level prices of rice have not met the expectation. (TGH/UN) (RAS/LW)
