Commemoration of Nuzulul Quran (the revelation of the Quran) carries not only religious meaning but also deep nationalism meaning for the Indonesian people, according to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

“It enhances not only our understanding but also serves as an event to manifest national unity that is part of our faith,” President Jokowi said in his remarks during the Commemoration of 1440 H / 2019 A.D Nuzulul Quran, at the State Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday (21/5).

By commemorating Nuzulul Quran, the President added, we can gain a lot of inspirations to strengthen our unity as a nation, to put aside our sectional and group ego, and to lift national spirit.

The Head of State said that Nuzulul Quran is commemorated to affirm our commitment in performing our task as a human being in the world, namely do good deeds and to avoid evil deeds.

“Our role is to build a harmonious social order, a peaceful social order, and to enhance prosperity and justice,” he firmly said.

President Jokowi went on to say that in commemorating Nuzulul Quran, we are also commemorating Prophet Muhammad who had successfully build a new social order by uniting several different ethnicities in Saudi Arabia into one big nation, and uniting all Muslims in the world in a strong bond of faith, as well as brought civilization to the Age of Ignorance (jahiliyyah).

When the founding fathers initiated the Commemoration of Nuzulul Quran, the Head of State continued, they harmonized the spirit of religion and the spirit of nationalism. In fact, the First President Bung Karno began a tradition to commemorate the Nuzulul Quran at the Palace.

“The commemoration is a token of gratitude for our independence that was given by God the Almighty. We also commemorate legacies of the founders of our country who united Indonesia’s diversity in the frame of nationalism, as mandated in the state ideology Pancasila,” President Jokowi said.

The Head of State expressed belief that the unity, harmony, and peace in Indonesia will be maintained if we implement Quran and Muhammad’s Prophethood in our daily life, as well as inspired by our ancestors’ struggle. “Indonesia will be a better, a prosperous nation full of God’s blessings (baldatun toyyibatun wa rabbun ghafur),” he added.

Also attending the event were, among others, Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, Ministry of Agrarian and Spatial Planning (ATR)/ National Land Agency (BPN) Sofyan Jalil, Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya, a number of heads of state institutions, and ambassadors to friendly countries.
