President Jokowi Opens 42nd ASEAN Summit

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Wednesday (05/10) officially opened the 42nd ASEAN Summit at Meruorah Hotel, Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai regency, East Nusa Tenggara province.

“Good morning, Your Excellencies ASEAN Leaders. Welcome to the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo Indonesia,” the President said.

Attending the Summit were Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Laos Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim, President of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Hassanal Bolkiah, Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Don Pramudwinai, and Prime Minister of Vietnam Phạm Minh Chính.

Also present was Prime Minister of Timor Leste Taur Matan Ruak.

“And, His Excellency Taur Matan Ruak, Prime Minister of Timor Leste, welcome to the meeting with the ASEAN members,” the President said.

For the record, the theme of the ASEAN Summit this year is ASEAN Matters: Epicenter of Growth, meaning that ASEAN is relevant and pivotal as the center of the global growth.

Previously, in a press statement on Sunday (05/07), President Jokowi said that the decision to choose Labuan Bajo as the location of the ASEAN Summit is a momentum to promote the potentials of Labuan Bajo to ASEAN and the world.

“This is an auspicious momentum. We hold the ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo to promote Labuan Bajo so the world knows that Indonesia has Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara,” the President remarked. (TGH/UN) (FI/EP)
