President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed Cabinet Ministers to speed up efforts in encouraging Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to enter digital ecosystem since Indonesia has a huge digital economy potential.

The President made the statement while delivering his directives during a Limited Meeting on the Downstreaming of Digital Economy, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Thursday (10/6).

“The President has called for acceleration in the digitalization of MSMEs. It has been agreed and since the program is a cross-sectoral project, a Project Management Office (PMO) will be formed to coordinate the digitalization process,” Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Teten Masduki said in his press statement after attending the Limited Meeting.

By 2024, the Government is targeting 30 million of MSMEs players to enter digital ecosystem. In order to achieve the target, President Jokowi ordered the relevant ranks to implement a proactive strategy to encourage MSME players enter digital ecosystem.

“The President has given directives. There must be a proactive strategy because it is only about three years left, such as providing assistance and human resources, curating MSME products, and financing until they can be onboarded in e-commerce platforms,” he said.

As of May 2021, the Indonesian E-commerce Association (iDEA) data shows that the number of MSME players that have entered digital onboarding has reached 13.7 million or about 21 percent of the total MSMEs in the country. (DND/UN) (RIF/LW)
