President Jokowi Orders Construction of Educational Facilities Hit by Cianjur Quake

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Thursday (12/8) ordered Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono to immediately renovate quake-affected educational facilities in Cianjur regency.

“Earlier, I ordered the Minister to complete the construction of this elementary school [State Elementary School Sukamaju 1] in three months considering that children must be back to school,” President Jokowi said during the inspection to the State Elementary School Sukamaju 1 at Benjot village, Cugenang district in Cianjur regency.

Based on the report, the President said that there are 53,000 quake-affected houses, namely 12,900 houses with severe damage, 15,000 houses with moderate damage, and 25,000 houses with light damage.

“I have been here to Cugenang district, two times. The most damaged location is here considering that this is the very epicentrum. The most damaged houses, educational facilities, health facilities are here in Cugenang district,” he said.

The President went on to say that the Government would be focused on rehabilitation of quake-affected houses and general facilities, while underscoring that those houses and general facilities located in red zones will be relocated to more secure places.

In the meantime, Head of the State Elementary School Sukamaju 1 Elis Fahriyah expressed hope that the renovation could be immediately under way so that school activities can be back as usual.

She also expressed hope that trauma suffered by teachers, students can be speedy recovered, while expressing gratitude to the President and everyone who have been involved to carry out school rehabilitation. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/AIT) (AP/EP)
