President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has ordered the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to investigate the worker clash at PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry (GNI), North Morowali, Central Sulawesi.

“The President has ordered the Police to take firm action against the perpetrators of criminal acts, the perpetrators of vandalism, and the perpetrators of law violation,” Chief of the Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo said in a press conference at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Monday (01/16).

Sigit said that the Police had started to handle the case and had arrested a number of people involved.

“Several of the perpetrators of the vandalism have now been arrested. Approximately 71 [people] have been arrested and 17 people have been named suspects,” he said.

Sigit went on to say that personnel of the Polri and the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) have been assigned to oversee and maintain the situation to ensure that operational activities can run normally.

The Police Chief said that the destruction and arson at the nickel company started with a worker strike and industrial relation issues, and were exacerbated by provocation.

“Regarding industrial relation issues, they could be solved in accordance with provisions of laws and regulations. We as the law enforcement officials will oversee the process,” he said.

The Police Chief further said that the Polri and the TNI stand ready to provide security and safeguard the process because the industry is important not only for the workers, but also for the country. (RF/UN) (RI/LW)
