President Jokowi Receives Courtesy Call from Hong Kong Chief Executive
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Tuesday (07/25) received a courtesy call from the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, John Lee, and his delegation at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.
“The President said that there are a lot of investment opportunities in Indonesia, including in the construction of the new capital, as well as in infrastructure, transportation, digital technology, and green energy sectors,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi said in her statement after accompanying President Jokowi in the meeting.
According to Retno, both parties are committed to providing facilitation so that trade barriers can be reduced. In the first quarter last year, Indonesia’s trade with Hong Kong increased significantly by more than 20 percent.
President Jokowi, Retno added, has also talked about the protection of Indonesian citizens in Hong Kong. For the record, the number of Indonesian citizens in Hong Kong has reached more than 140,000 people, 90 percent of whom are migrant workers.
The Foreign Minister further said that the Chief Executive and several companies have shown their interest related to investment in Indonesia.
“They see that Indonesia’s economic development is very good and very stable. Thus, they will continue to strengthen economic cooperation with Indonesia,” the Minister remarked.
