Although security and order has been in check in the past two years, President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo reminded the Indonesian National Police that there is no place for complacency.

“The challenges ahead will be increasingly complex,” President Jokowi said in his remarks at the commemoration of the 73rd Polri Anniversary (Bhayangkara Day) at the National Monument Square, Jakarta, Wednesday (10/7).

According to the President, spread of hoaxes and hate speech poses a threat to the national harmony. “(Preventive measures of hoaxes and hate speech) require intelligence and swift action from the police,” he said.

Furthermore, he added, crimes that pose danger to the country such as corruption, illegal fishing, illegal mining and illegal logging must be tackled to protect the public and the nation.

“The National Police must handle all those crimes in professional and accountable manners and in synergy with other institutions,” he added.

On that occasion, President Jokowi also delivered five instructions for all levels of the personnel of the police, namely to increase self-capacity in the face of the increasingly complex tasks, to promote proactive and preventive strategies with humanistic approaches and actions, to always improve quality of public services, to improve  professionalism and transparency in law enforcement to provide a sense of justice to the community, and to strengthen coordination and cooperation with the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI), ministries/agencies, regional governments and communities in maintaining security and social order.
