Having inaugurated a high-level meeting, “The 2nd International Fisheries Symposium on Crime”, at Gedung Agung, Yogyakarta Presidential Palace, President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo accompanied by First Lady Ibu Iriana inspected the National Family Planning (KB) program in Piyungan Sub-district, Bantul Regency, Monday (10/10) afternoon.

In his speech, President Jokowi reminded the audience that nowadays the competition among countries has been very tight. Therefore, if we want our country to move forward in the future, it should start from the family.

“It is the family that should be planned; whether one child or two children in the family. The most important thing is a family that is well-planned,” the President said.

The President further stated that when a child was born, it definitely needed cost, the cost for clothing, shoes. Later on, when S/he goes to elementary school (SD), there are school fees, uniform fees, fees for purchasing bag. When in junior high school (SMP), the costs rise. The same applies to when in senior high school (SMA), and when entering college or university, the cost will rise even more.

“Do not let our children’s education stop in elementary school nor in junior high school. Continue to go to school because education can make us be capable of competing with other countries,” the President said.

In this regard, the President reminded the mothers of KB participants in Piyungan Subdistrict, Bantul Regency, of the importance of nutritious food particularly for pregnant mothers. Protein, for example, is very important for our children from one to five years old. When they are in elementary school, their nutrient needs to be monitored.

The President emphasized that protein is crucial for our children either when they are in the womb or were already born. Foods that contain protein, among other, are tofu, tempeh, fish, meat and egg eating. Apart from consuming protein, children should not forget to consume vegetables.

According to the President, we have to make a planning from the very beginning what the future of our children will be like, where to go to SD, SMP, SMA, or vocational school (SMK) as well as to college or university. “It is impossible and should not be that we are thinking of sending our children only until elementary school or junior high school then afterwards, they work. It should not be this way. Be careful, stop thinking like that,” the President said. The President also added that to get into the higher levels of education requires fee. Therefore, the President suggested the people to set aside their revenues little by little from the very beginning.

Also present on the event were Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Puan Maharani, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Governor of Yogyakarta Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X and Head of the National Family Planning Coordinating Board (BKKBN) Surya Chandra Surapati.
