President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo respects the newly enacted regulation of General Election Commission (KPU) that prohibits of former corruption inmates to run in next year’s legislative elections.

“The Law regulates KPU’s authority to make regulations,” the President said in Sidenreng Rappang Regency, South Sulawesi, on Monday (2/7).

Nevertheless, the President continued, if later there are parties oppose this new regulation, they could express their objection by submitting material review to the Supreme Court.

For the record, KPU has enacted Regulation Number 20 of 2018 on the Candidacy of Members of the House of Representatives (DPR), Provincial Legislative Councils, and Regency/City Legislative Councils.

Article 7 paragraph (1) point h of the regulation stated that former corruption inmates, former drug dealers and former child sexual offenders are prohibited to become legislative candidates.

The regulation was signed by the Chairman of KPU Arief Budiman only four days before this institution opens registration for legislative election candidates on 4 July 2018. (BPMI/EN) (GWH/MMB/Naster)
