President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo sent a Chinese Lunar New Year 2570 greeting to those celebrating it on the President’s official Instagram account @jokowi.

“May the new year bring us a strong brotherhood and an abundance of joy, love, and peace,” President Jokowi said.

For the record, the practice of Chinese religious activities, beliefs , and customs in public places was allowed without restrictions since the issuance of Presidential Decree Number 6 of 2000.

“Observing religious activities, Chinese beliefs and customs constitutes an integral part of human rights,” states Presidential Decree signed by the 4th President of the Republic of Indonesia Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid on 17 January 2000.

Abdurrahman Wahid also declared Imlek or Chinese New Year an optional public holiday on Presidential Decree Number 19 of 2001 which was stipulated on 9 April 2001. A year later, during the administration of the 5th President of the Republic of Indonesia Megawati Soekarnoputri, Imlek was declared a national public holiday effective from 2003 until today.
