President Jokowi Suggests Kupang Cathedral Church Be Utilized for Social Activities

President Jokowi Wednesday (12/06) inaugurates the rehabilitation of Cathedral Church of Archdiocese of Kupang, in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara province.

During the inauguration of the rehabilitation of Cathedral Church of Archdiocese of Kupang in East Nusa Tenggara province, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Wednesday (12/06) expressed hope that the church can serve not only as a place of worship but also as a center for social activities in East Nusa Tenggara province.

“I would like to suggest that this house of worship, which has a capacity of 1,500 congregations, be used not only as a place of worship, but also for other social activities, providing spaces to engage in dialogue, strengthen brotherhood, and promote harmony to reinforce national unity and integrity,” President Jokowi said.

For the record, the Cathedral Church was affected by Cyclone Seroja that hit Kupang city. The State Budget then was allocated to fund the rehabilitation.

“Using the state budget, the Cathedral Church was built [and] rehabilitated. Just now when I stepped inside, I was truly amazed, the interior is very, very well done, very beautiful,” he said.

The President also added that the rehabilitation of the Cathedral Church was carried out thoroughly by building a new church wider than the previous building. The rehabilitation also includes the construction of a parish secretariat, bell tower, panel room, and generator set.

“Today, we can truly see together the new face of the Christ the King Catholic Cathedral in Kupang, which is magnificent, beautiful, and well-landscaped. A historic church that is part of the existence of the Catholic Church in Kupang city,” he said. (TGH/UN) (FI/MMB)
