President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo thanked President of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Gianni Infantino for choosing Indonesia to host the U-20 World Cup in 2021.

According to President Jokowi, Indonesia— which has experience in organizing both the 2018 Asian Games and Asian Para Games— will work hard to ensure that the upcoming U-20 World Cup is successful and safe.

The Indonesian Government is also preparing ten stadiums located in the islands of Sumatra, Java, and Bali for the event, the President added.

“As the host, Indonesia welcomes the FIFA Advance Team to coordinate with the PSSI (Indonesian Football Association),” President Jokowi added.

In the meantime, Gianni Infantino said he was happy with FIFA’s decision to appoint Indonesia to host the U-20 World Cup.

“Indonesia is a big country that is fond of football very much. It is also very important for FIFA to hold a big event for Indonesia and for the whole of Asia,” Infantino told reporters after meeting with President Jokowi, in Bangkok, Thailand, Saturday (2/11).

The World Cup, Infantino added, is not just an event, but part of a program to develop football throughout the country.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi said that FIFA’s President and the leaders of ASEAN countries have signed four points of cooperation, among others, promotion of sport integrity, sport for development, FIFA football for school program, and professional capacity building.
