President Jokowi to National Police: Prioritize Prevention Measures to Maintain Public Security, Order
The Indonesian National Police (Polri) must prioritize prevention measures to maintain public security and order, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said.
“Always take various actions humanely, but firm when necessary. Make law enforcement as a last resort, police must comply with procedures and uphold human rights,” said the President in his directives on the Commemoration of the 76th Police Day Anniversary at the Police Academy, Semarang, Central Java province, Tuesday (07/05).
The President also reminded that the public must feel the sense of justice and the benefits of the law, adding that the Polri has enormous authority, penetrates down to the village level, and is in direct contact with the public.
“Whenever you are on duty, you will always be under the public scrutiny and judgement. The public will judge the behavior of the Police, whether it is in line with their expectation,” he said.
The President then cited the latest survey from leading media agency Kompas, stating that most of the respondents considered that the actions of the Police were already in accordance with the vision. Thus, the President reminded the Police to continue to work with caution and precision.
“I also continue to follow the news in conventional media and social media. Any carelessness on the ground, no matter how small, can damage public confidence in the Polri institution. Therefore, work carefully, work with precision,” he said.
Closing his directives, the President expressed appreciation for the hard work that has been carried out by the National Police for the people, nation and state.
“On behalf of the people, nation and state, I wish you a happy 76th Police Day and I give appreciation for the hard work of the Police in serving the people, in defending the nation and state. All Indonesian people and I have high hopes for the Police,” he remarked. (FID/UN) (EST/MUR)
