President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has underscored the importance of maintaining national unity and solidarity in this political year.

The President made the statement at the Inauguration of the Central Management Board and the Inauguration of the 2023 National Work Meeting of the Indonesian Christian Youth Movement (GAMKI) at Benteng Square in Medan city, North Sumatra province, Saturday (08/19).

“I urge the Central Management Board of GAMKI to participate in cooling off the situation on the ground. If something gets hot, cool it off, cool it down because amidst global uncertainties such as now, we need to be focused while working, to work in harmony, to work in solidarity,” he said.

According to the President, unity does not only mean having no dispute but also synergizing to realize the vision of Advanced Indonesia and promoting the national economy so that it continues to grow amid global uncertainties.

The President pointed out that 96 countries are currently aided by the IMF and several member countries of the European Union also face challenges in maintaining economic growth and curbing inflation rate.

“If that is the situation and the people do not unite, are not in solidarity, how can leaders solve the existing big issues and problems?” he said while stressing the need to promote the culture of kinship and gotong royong (mutual cooperation) to the people.

The President also urged the people to unite once the general elections are done.

“Racing and competing are allowed, but do not offend anyone, let alone get violent. We are of the same nation and homeland. After competing, after racing, we can be friends again and unite again. Neighbors should greet each other again after the elections,” he remarked. (KS/DK/UN) (DH/MMB)
