President Jokowi Urges Higher Education Institutions to be Adaptive, Innovative

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Friday (03/11) attended the Academic Senate Open Session of the 46th Dies Natalis of Sebelas Maret University (UNS) which was held at the UNS Tower Ki Hadjar Dewantara in Surakarta city, Central Java province.

“First and foremost, I would like to wish the big family of UNS happy 46th anniversary and I also would like to express my gratitude for your significant contribution in the development and advancement of the community in Surakarta city, in Central Java province, and in Indonesia. By continuing to innovate and transform, I am confident that UNS will be more successful in executing its mandate to make contribution to achieve an advanced Indonesia that we aspire to be,” President Jokowi said.

According to the Head of State, the Government is currently preparing human resources development to deal with rapid changes. Thus, the President encouraged UNS and other higher education institutions to quickly learn and to be adaptive in responding any changes.

President Jokowi further said that the rapid development of science and technology must be followed by dynamic, fast education programs and researches that are in accordance with the challenges of our time. Moreover, the Government is trying to pursue the demographic bonus momentum that is expected to happen from 2030 to 2035, thus, digital talents must be prepared from now on.

“I have calculated. Our Ministers and I have calculated. We only have the opportunity to change in the next two years considering the demographic bonus is projected to happen in 2030-2035. Digital talents must be prepared. All countries now are competing. Digital talent is important. AI (Artificial Intelligence), cloud computing, digital design, digital marketing, blockchain, all of these stuffs are important,” the President added.

On that occasion, President Jokowi also expressed his appreciation to Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for its “Kampus Merdeka” (Independent Campus) Program which facilitates students to learn from anywhere, anytime, and with anyone. Through this program, students can get opportunities and gain more experiences from related industries.

After delivering his remarks, President Jokowi moved to the Plaza of UNS Tower Ki Hadjar Dewantara to sign two inscriptions to mark the inauguration of UNS Tower Ki Hadjar Dewantara and Sebelas Maret University Building in Madiun regency, East Java province.

Also joining the President during the inauguration were Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Governor of Central Java Ganjar Pranowo, Rector of UNS Jamal Wiwoho, and Chairperson of Academic Senate of UNS Adi Sulistiyono.
