President Jokowi Urges People Not to Flee Wamena
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo stated that the security forces have been able to control the situation in the city of Wamena, the capital of Jayawijaya Regency in Papua, and urged the people not to leave the city.
For the record, a deadly riot occured in Wamena which has killed more than 30 people while thousand others are fleeing their homes to other cities.
“Some people are still afraid (of the condition) in Wamena so they ask to be evacuated to Jayapura. However, we continue to urge the people not to leave the city as the security forces have secured the region,” the President told reporters at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, Monday (30/9).
President Jokowi also asked the people to remain calm and avoid all provocations and slanders in social media.
Earlier, the President has stated that the Wamena riot was carried out by armed criminal groups which came down from the mountain areas to the city and started to set fires.
“I have instructed Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) as well as the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to catch and arrest the rioters,” President Jokowi said. (MAY/JAY/ES)
