President Jokowi Urges People to Use Social Media Wisely

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo urged the people to use social media wisely and to always double check the information spread in social media.

The President told his experience of being slandered as supporter of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) because (of an image) of him standing next to D.N. Aidit who was delivering a speech. In fact, the President continued, it happened in 1955 while he was not born yet.

“It is a political matter,” President Jokowi said while delivering remarks at the distribution of 5000 land certificates for Jakarta residents, at Cakung Park, Jakarta, Monday (3/12).

President Jokowi said that he needed to explain this because the hoaxes continue to occur.

He also reminded that Indonesia is a big country with population of 263 million people and different ethnics, different religions, different traditions, and different regional languages.

Therefore, the President asked to maintain brotherhood, unity and harmony. “This is the strength of our country. Indonesia’s greatest asset is unity and brotherhood,” President Jokowi concluded.

Also attending the occasion were First Lady Ibu Iriana Jokowi, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning/ Head of National Land Agency Sofyan Jalil, Minister of Social Affairs Agus Gumiwang and Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan. (RAH / EN / ES)
