President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo urged the land certificates’ recipients to use the certificate wisely. “For example, do not sell or mortgage it for consumption expenditure. If you want to use it as collateral, please recalculate the amount of loan and the interest first,” the President said when distributing land certificates at Maulana Yudha Tigaraksa Field, Tangerang Regency, Monday (18/2).

On the occasion, one of the recipients of the certificate named Isra expressed his opinion on land conversion issue that commonly occurs in his village. He, who received a land certificate for his 565-square-meters rice field, explained that the farmers in his village commonly sell their land to property developers to build a housing complex. Almost half of rice fields in his village already converted from its original function [as paddy fields], he continued.

In respond to Isra, President Jokowi said that the people of Indonesia need farmers and paddy fields to provide food commodity to maintain the country’s food supply. Thus, the President suggested the farmers not to sell their lands.

For the record, President Jokowi distributed 5,000 land certificates to residents in Tangerang Regency, Banten Province. The certificates cover 2,649,359 square meters area that located at Balaraja, Cisoka, Jayanti, Rajeg, Solear, Sukamulya, and Tigaraksa Districts. (BPMI/EN)
