Teachers should improve their skills to develop excellent human resources in Indonesia, according to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

The President delivered the statement in his remarks at the 77th Anniversary of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) and commemoration of National Teachers’ Day in Semarang, Central Java, Saturday (12/03).

“In the midst of a very rapid change, teachers should improve skills, adapt to increasingly sophisticated educational technology, and master new knowledge and new skills relevant to the challenges and needs of today’s changing world,” the President said.

According to the President, excellent human resources require mastery of science and technology and improvement of technical skills.

“Teachers should always catch up with updated information. Today, the most important thing in teaching is to ensure that the teaching process support children to have a good critical thinking ability, so that flexibility is needed. It should not be rigid, it has to be flexible, because the knowledge expands very quickly,” he said.

The second factor, he added, is mentality and character. The President emphasized that politeness, honesty, good manners, caring for others, hard work, and being able to work together are increasingly important to be taught and must be continuously developed.

The third component is physical health. The President said that mastery of knowledge and skills would be useless if the students were not healthy.

“Let me reiterate that our duty is to produce excellent human resources with excellent academic achievement, excellent skills, excellent character, and excellent physical health. This is no easy task for all of you,” President Jokowi remarked. (FID/UN) (RI/MUR)
