President Jokowi Visits Papua Flood Victims

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo accompanied by First Lady Ibu Iriana on Monday (4/1) visited Toware Sports Center and Kemiri State Elementary School to directly inspect flash flood victims in Sentani, Jayapura regency.

According to the President, from that visits he discovered flood affected areas that must be relocated, as well as areas that need reservoirs.  “The areas where houses cannot be rebuilt should be relocated. This has been discussed by Minister of Public Works and Public Housing, the regent, and the Governor,” the President added.

On that occasion, President Jokowi also listened to the students  who requested the Government to clean and rehabilitate their schools damaged by the floods. “The construction will be carried out tomorrow so all of you can study in here again,” President Jokowi said.

President Jokowi also instructed Minister of Education and Culture to provide educational assistance, including school textbooks, and to repair school facilities.

Also joining the visit were, among others, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Doni Monardo, and Papua Governor Lukas Enembe. (EN/OJI/ES)
