Following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Mamuju and Majene Regencies, West Sulawesi Province, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, on Tuesday (19/1), inspected the Manakarra Stadium evacuation post in Mamuju Regency.

“I’m here to ensure that the evacuation process, assistance to the communities, logistics for refugees, and refugee tents are well managed,” the President said.

The Central Government, the President stated, would provide assistance by rehabilitating destroyed government buildings so that public services can continue running. “Earlier, I have told the Governor that once audited, the Central Government will rehabilitate the government buildings,” he said.

President Jokowi also expressed his deep condolences for the victims of the earthquake. “I’d like to express my deep sorrow for the victims, approximately 80 people have been found dead. May the bereaved family be given heartiness and patience,” he added.

During his inspection, the President also stated that the Central Government would provide assistance for the revamp of damaged residential houses. “The Government will provide Rp50 million for a house with severe damage, Rp25 million for moderate damage, and Rp10 for light damage,” he said.

For the record, Manakarra Stadium is currently being used as a refugee shelter for residents affected by the earthquake. A number of tents have been built to accommodate residents without loosening the health protocols.

After the inspection at the evacuation post, the President also visited a residential location near the Stadium where many houses were severely damaged. (BPMI/UN) (FI/MUR)
