President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto and His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan held a bilateral meeting with their respective delegations at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Friday (11/14). The meeting was one of the key agendas of King Abdullah II during his state visit to Indonesia, underscoring the deepening friendship and strategic cooperation between the two nations, particularly amid the evolving dynamics in the Middle East.
In his opening remarks, President Prabowo conveyed his gratitude and deep respect for King Abdullah II’s willingness to visit Indonesia in the midst of regional challenges.
“I would like to thank you, Your Majesty, for the great honor you give us by visiting us at this point in time, when we know you have difficult situation in the region of the Middle East. Welcome to Jakarta,” President Prabowo stated.
The Head of State further stressed that relations between Indonesia and Jordan have remained close for more than seven decades. Beyond diplomatic ties, President Prabowo also recalled the personal connection he has long shared with the Jordanian Royal Family, particularly with the late King Hussein.
“On another level, as you know, I have an emotional bond with Jordan. His Majesty and His Majesty King Hussein kindly received me, I think I forgot how many years ago, nearly 26 or 27? 1999, yes. That is how close we are. I always remember fondly my years in Jordan,” the President said.
President Prabowo also shared that he had prepared his private residence in Hambalang to welcome King Abdullah II. He expressed hope that on a future visit, His Majesty might return together with his family.
“I have prepared my own residence to receive Your Majesty, but it is about an hour from Jakarta. Perhaps next time I can convince you to come back again with your family,” he remarked, met with a warm smile from the distinguished guest.
Responding to President Prabowo’s warm welcome, King Abdullah II expressed his profound appreciation for the honor and hospitality extended by Indonesia.
“It is always a pleasure to meet with you. On behalf of myself and the entire delegation, I would like to thank you for the extremely warm and generous welcome that we’ve had back into Jakarta,” King Abdullah II began.
His Majesty also conveyed his condolences for the victims of the recent floods in Indonesia and strongly condemned the attack on a secondary school in Jakarta.
“Jordan will always stand by your side and support you in everything,” he affirmed.
During the meeting, King Abdullah II reflected on the long-standing friendship between his family and President Prabowo. With great warmth, he recalled the moment when the late King Hussein welcomed President Prabowo as part of their family.
“We became friends many-many years ago; we became brothers. I would always tell my father about this very special friendship. When you came to Jordan, my father asked me, ‘Who is this person?’ I said, ‘He is my brother.’ And my father said, ‘If he is your brother, then he is my brother.’ And we have never looked back ever since,” King Abdullah II recalled.
