President Prabowo Announces Enactment of Domestic Workers Protection Law

Hundreds of thousands of people attend the commemoration of the International Labor Day held at the National Monument, Jakarta, on Friday (05/01).
President Prabowo Subianto announced that the Government has officially enacted the Domestic Workers Protection Law (UU PPRT). The announcement was made during his speech at the commemoration of the International Labor Day held at the National Monument, Jakarta, on Friday (05/01). The Head of State emphasized that the establishment of this regulation marked a significant milestone in the long struggle to protect domestic workers in Indonesia.
“Today, I can tell all of you that we have passed the Domestic Workers Protection Law. If I am not mistaken, this has been a long struggle, 22 years. In fact, since the founding of the Republic, there has never been a law protecting domestic workers,” said the President.
On that occasion, President Prabowo highlighted that domestic workers have long faced uncertain conditions without clear protection, particularly regarding wages and other basic rights. Therefore, the enactment of this law represents an important step toward ensuring clear and fair legal protection for domestic workers across Indonesia.
“A law protecting domestic workers has never existed before. Until now, domestic workers, no matter how much they are paid, have had no clarity. Now, for the first time in the history of the Republic of Indonesia, we have enacted a law to protect domestic workers,” he added.
Furthermore, the President expressed his appreciation and respect for workers for their dedication and struggle. He stated that anyone who earns a living honestly and lawfully is honorable.
“I understand, I feel, and I respect your struggles. A person who works with their body, with their sweat, with their hands, is honorable, someone who works lawfully. Someone who strives for their children and their spouse. Every day, those who work lawfully, based on my experience, workers, farmers, and fishermen, even those who live in hardship, are often the most honest and sincere people,” he said.
President Prabowo emphasized that government policies under his leadership over the past year have been directed toward defending the interests of all Indonesian people, especially workers. He also called on all elements of society to continue upholding the values of honesty and hard work in building the nation.
The enactment of the Domestic Workers Protection Law ahead of this year’s International Labor Day serves as a powerful symbol that the state is no longer turning a blind eye, but is present to protect and honor every worker.
