President Prabowo Calls for ASEAN Unity, Peace at ASEAN Summit Plenary Session

President Prabowo Subianto attended the plenary session of the 48th ASEAN Summit held at Mactan Expo, Cebu, the Philippines, on Friday (5/8). On the occasion, he emphasized that ASEAN should serve as an anchor of the regional stability amid global geopolitical dynamics, achieved through solidarity and cooperation.
“We must set an example, we commit to promote ASEAN that is solid, that maintain peace, stability, dialog and collaboration,” said the President.
President Prabowo deemed that conflict and geopolitical rivalry will only harm people and hinder regional development. Therefore, President Prabowo emphasized that ASEAN must promote dialogue and collaboration as the main foundation of multilateral cooperation.
“We should not allow competition. We should not let the past drive our present or future. Indonesia commits to establishing a harmonious neighbouring policy,” he said.
President Prabowo also reminded participants that ASEAN must keep its independence and remain neutral to global geopolitical rivalry that might threaten regional unity. “Once again, we must not be dragged or influenced by the current geopolitical rivalry and ego,” he continued.
Moreover, the President urged ASEAN members to promote peace and cooperation in the region amid multiple global challenges. According to him, ASEAN must be able to set an example as a region that is stable, harmonious, and upholds world peace.
“Amid a deeper division, ASEAN peace culture not only must be preserved, but it must be advanced to set a global example. ASEAN must be a peace zone,” he concluded.
