President Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to achieving national food self-sufficiency, particularly in rice. The Head of State conveyed this directive during a limited cabinet meeting with several ministers of Red and White Cabinet to discuss food security at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Thursday (9/10).

Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman in his press statement to the media after the meeting stated that the food self-sufficiency target would be achieved soon.

“Thank God, today everything seems on track. In about two to three months, God willing, Indonesia will no longer need to import (rice). Hopefully, there won’t be any extreme climate,” said Amran.

According to Amran, the acceleration of this target is supported by encouraging production achievements. Based on data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), national rice production up to November 2025 reached 33.1 million tons and is projected to increase to 34 million tons by the end of the year. This figure is up by 4 million tons compared to the previous year.

“This is interesting, according to the FAO, our production increase is the second highest in the world after Brazil. This is from the FAO,” Amran added.

The Head of State is also giving big attention on improving farmers’ welfare. In addition to the increase in production, the Government has recorded improvements in farmer welfare indicators. Amran explained that the Farmer’s Exchange Rate (NTP) now stands at 124.36, exceeding the government’s target of 110. Meanwhile, rice prices experienced a deflation of 0.13 percent in September 2025. This happened for the first time in the last five years.

These positive developments form the basis for optimism in the agricultural sector to continue strengthening other subsectors. With rice production showing improvement, Government is beginning to prepare follow-up steps to replicate this success across other strategic commodities.

“These are our big dreams for the agricultural sector. Once we secure food, God willing, we will then move on to plantations and horticulture this year, and finally to livestock. We will tackle them one by one,” Amran added. (Bureau of Press, Media, and Information of the Presidential Secretariat) (TCUD/LW)
