Coordinating Minister of Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra emphasized that the Government is committed to ensuring that all measures in handling the national situation, including demonstrations are carried out in accordance with legal frameworks and upholds human rights.

The Minister made the statement after attending a limited meeting led by President Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta,  Thursday (9/04).

“The President has ensured that every action has been taken according to the legal framework and we are confident that these measures have been implemented in the most effective manner,” said Yusril.

According to Yusril, President Prabowo underscored the importance of maintaining unity within the government in facing the current national situation.

As the Coordinating Minister of Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Affairs, Yusril explained that his main duty is to ensure all law enforcement officers act in accordance with legal frameworks, while putting human rights above everything.

“It is emphasized by the President not to let any unlawful action,” he said.

Yusril also stressed that strict legal action would be taken to those who exploit demonstrations to commit crimes.

“The law enforcement measures emphasized by the President are specifically directed at individuals who misuse demonstrations to carry out acts such as vandalism, arson, and theft,” he explained.

However, Yusril once again underscored that rigorous measures taken by law enforcement officers must still remain within the bounds of the legal framework and consistently upholds the principle of human rights.

“Those who are summoned, interrogated, detained, and so on must still be treated in accordance with the legal framework. If this is violated, then the law enforcement officers must also be sanctioned for breaching the norm of law enforcement,” Yusril added.

On that occasion, Yusril also conveyed the Government’s commitment to maintaining the balance between rigorous law enforcement and the violation.

Moreover, the Government is also committed to the protection of citizens’ rights to express their aspirations publicly, he added.

“The people should not feel afraid or worried. The Government guarantees the freedom of people to express their aspirations, voice their opinions, and convey their feelings through demonstrations, as long as these are conducted peacefully, orderly, and in accordance with the legal framework,” he concluded.
