President Prabowo Subianto has issued the Government Regulation on Governance for Electronic System Providers in Child Protection, during an event held at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Friday (03/28). The Regulation serves as one of the Government’s strategic measures in strengthening child protection from the negative impacts of digital technology.

“Digital technology is promising. It can bring rapid progress to humanity, but if it is not well-monitored and well-managed, it can also cause harm to all aspects of social life, especially it can destroy morality, psychology, and character of our children,” President Prabowo said in his remarks.

The President also emphasized that children are the future of the nation and they must grow in good health, as well as have creativity and good characters. Therefore, the Government has promulgated the Government Regulation on Child Protection which serves as guidelines for child-friendly electronic system management.

“Our children must grow into individuals who are brave, independent, optimistic, and eager to gain knowledge and to do their best for their parents, their brothers and sisters, and their nation,” President Prabowo stated firmly.

President Prabowo also expressed his appreciation to all parties who have been involved in the making of the Government Regulation from its conception to its promulgation. “It is the result of your work, I listen to your suggestions and finally we realize them today,” the President said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Communications and Digitals Meutya Hafid explained that the Government Regulation on Child Protection is a follow-up of Law Number 1 of 2024 on Information and Electronic Transaction. The process of making the Government Regulation has accommodated 287 inputs from 24 stakeholders and hundreds of national and international institutions.

“Massive support from the public and parents, including international figures such as Prof. Jonathan Haidt, and a number of digital platform providers has contibuted positively to the commitment to transform Indonesian digital space into a safer and more child-friendly digital space,” Meutya mentioned in her report.

The event to celebrate the promulgation of the Government Regulation on Child Protection was held during the mass holiday season ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1446 Hijri. President Prabowo’s decision to stage and lead the event despite the national holiday season shows that the Government is serious about making child protection issue a major priority amidst digital transformation acceleration.

State officials who were also present at the event were Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Pratikno, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Arifah Fauzi, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
