President Prabowo Subianto paid zakat to the National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) at an event held at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Friday (03/13). Payment of zakat by the President was part of the Head of State’s commitment to fulfill his obligation as a muslim and to optimize national zakat management.

Upon arriving at the State Palace, President Prabowo Subianto proceeded directly to a zakat counter desk. In front of Head of the BAZNAS Dikdik Sodik Mudjahid, the President paid his zakat and utter niyyah (intention to perform an act of worship in Islam). The procession then continued with Head of the BAZNAS reciting a prayer.

In his remarks at a Plenary Cabinet Meeting following the zakat payment, President Prabowo Subianto emphasized the importance of the BAZNAS and other religious economic institutions in collecting and managing zakat potential in Indonesia. He expressed belief that a well-coordinated management of zakat can be a significant economic power for the nation.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, today we set an example by paying our zakat, and this once again shows the important role of the BAZNAS. We must coordinate, consolidate, and boost the competence of the BAZNAS and other financial institutions, including religious economic institutions in Indonesia, with the current technology so the economic potential of our nation can be well mobilized, to be efficient and effective,” stated the President.

Meanwhile, Head of the BAZNAS expressed his appreciation for the example set by the President, the Vice President, and members of the Red and White Cabinet who fulfilled their zakat obligations through the BAZNAS. According to him, such an example from national leaders has a big impact in encouraging public participation in paying zakat.

Alhamdulillah, today, on the 23rd day of Ramadhan, the BAZNAS has symbolically received the payment of zakat from the President, the Vice President, and the cabinet members. This sets a good example. Not only is our zakat collection increasing, but what is even more important is the moral support shown by national figures and government officials who pay their zakat through the BAZNAS,” he said.

On the same occasion, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming, ministers of the Red and White Cabinet, and heads of national agencies also paid their zakat through the BAZNAS. Through this event, the Government expected a more optimal zakat management so that zakat collected can be a social-economic power to help  those in need, especially in the holy month of Ramadhan.
