President Prabowo, PM Narendra Modi Visit Prambanan Temple
President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit the Prambanan Temple Compounds in the Special Region of Yogyakarta on Wednesday (07/08).
President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, Wednesday (07/08), visited the Prambanan Temple Compounds in the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
This visit marked the beginning of Prambanan Temple conservation cooperation, following up on the commitment made by the two countries in the Indonesia–India strategic partnership.
In his remarks at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (07/07), PM Modi noted that he and President Prabowo would officiate the start of the Prambanan Temple conservation project, adding that the temple, which is over a thousand years old, is a symbol connecting the shared history and culture of Indonesia and India.
The conservation cooperation is an implementation of the agreement made by the two leaders during the Indonesia–India meeting in 2025. To follow up, the Indian Government, Indonesian Ministry of Culture, Indonesian Heritage Institute, and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have conducted a series of technical preparations, including making site visits and creating conservation project reports.
Previously, the two countries signed the Letter of Intent (LoI) on the Conservation and Restoration of Prambanan Temple Compounds, which is one of the outcomes of the bilateral meeting between President Prabowo and PM Modi at Merdeka Palace on Tuesday (07/07).
These conservation efforts are of great importance as public interest in visiting Prambanan Temple increases. Throughout 2025, the world cultural heritage site was visited by over 2.3 million tourists, and as of the second quarter of 2026, the number of visitors has exceeded 1.3 million.
This trend affirms the Prambanan Temple’s position as one of Indonesia’s top cultural heritage destinations that continues to develop into a world-class destination, bringing a positive impact on the national economy and tourism.
The collaboration enhances cooperation between Indonesia and India in cultural heritage conservation and strengthens the historic relations that have endured for centuries.
