President Prabowo, PM Starmer Discuss Indonesia–UK Strategic Partnership

President Prabowo Subianto on Saturday (11/22) held a virtual meeting with Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer.

The virtual meeting was an important moment in strengthening bilateral relations and paved the way for the official launch of the Indonesia–UK Strategic Partnership early next year.

In a written statement, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said that President Prabowo and Prime Minister Starmer agreed that the strategic partnership would serve as a new milestone in the history of Indonesia–UK relations.

“The two leaders aim to officially launch the Indonesia–UK Strategic Partnership that is expected to become a new milestone in the history of cooperation between the two countries,” the Cabinet Secretary said.

He also stated that one of the main points of discussion was the maritime sector. President Prabowo and Prime Minister Starmer agreed to strengthen the Maritime Partnership Program, including cooperation in maritime security, information sharing, and capacity building for law enforcement.

The Cabinet Secretary added that the President and the Prime Minister also discussed the acceleration of the Economic Growth Partnership. President Prabowo emphasized Indonesia’s readiness to expand economic collaboration focused on job creation and long-term growth.

“President Prabowo stated that Indonesia is ready to expand collaboration that supports job creation and sustainable economic growth,” the Cabinet Secretary said.

In the education sector, Prime Minister Starmer reaffirmed support for plans to expand the presence of leading UK universities in Indonesia and commitment to provide up to 10,000 scholarships for Indonesian students.

Beyond bilateral issues, the two leaders also discussed developments in Gaza. President Prabowo and Prime Minister Starmer highlighted the urgency of establishing an international stabilisation force to protect civilians and ensure that humanitarian assistance can be delivered without disruption.

The Cabinet Secretary further said that the meeting was a significant step for strategic Indonesia–UK agendas.

“The virtual meeting marked an important first step toward a shared agenda early next year and reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to building an inclusive, visionary, and mutually beneficial partnership,” the Cabinet Secretary remarked.
