President Prabowo’s presence marks a historic moment as this is the first time Indonesia participates as a full member of BRICS.
According to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Indonesia’s participation in the BRICS forum is the result of President Prabowo’s initiative during his first year in office.
“Indonesia’s entry into BRICS membership was the initiative of President Prabowo in his first year as the President of the Republic of Indonesia. Indonesia was warmly welcomed by all BRICS members and was accepted as the 11th member of BRICS,” the Cabinet Secretary stated in a written statement.
With its current membership now consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, and Indonesia, BRICS now represents 50 percent of the world’s population and accounts for 35 percent of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“President Prabowo is optimistic that Indonesia’s participation in BRICS will bolster its position globally and emphasizes the importance of international cooperation through forums like BRICS to support global stability and prosperity,” the Cabinet Secretary said.
The Cabinet Secretary also stated that the principles underpinning President Prabowo’s approach to international relations were reaffirmed at the forum—namely, the importance of expanding networks of friendship and strategic cooperation among nations in support of global peace and prosperity.
“Indonesia’s accession to BRICS membership embodies the President’s longstanding belief that a thousand friends are too few, one enemy is too many,” the Cabinet Secretary remarked. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (RI/TM)
