President Prabowo Subianto and PM Modi Highlight Historic Milestone in Indonesia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi Tuesday (07//07) delivered a joint press statement following their bilateral meeting at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.
In his statement, President Prabowo Subianto described the state visit of PM Modi as a historic milestone, marking the increasingly close relations between the two countries.
“PM Modi’s state visit this time is a historic milestone. It reflects the commitment of both countries to continue advancing [our] comprehensive strategic partnership through tangible, mutually beneficial cooperation,” stated the President.
During the productive and substantive meeting, the two leaders discussed a range of strategic issues of mutual interest of Indonesia and India.
In the political sector, President Prabowo Subianto and PM Modi agreed to strengthen their partnership by increasing the frequency of high-level visits, enhancing coordination through bilateral consultation mechanisms, and deepening inter-institutional cooperation.
The two leaders also committed to strengthening counterterrorism efforts and enhancing security cooperation through the ‘Third India-Indonesia Security Dialogue’.
“As transnational security challenges continue to grow, we are committed to deepening cooperation in capacity-building, leveraging new technologies, combating transnational crime, and developing digital infrastructure,” he added.
To enhance people-to-people connectivity, President Prabowo Subianto expressed support for the development of port infrastructure in both countries.
In the economic sphere, the two countries are committed to boosting trade by accelerating the Indonesia–India Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) and reviewing the ASEAN–India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA).
“To strengthen financial sector cooperation, we welcome the progress in discussions on establishing a cross-border QR Payment linkage between Indonesia and India. This system is expected to improve transaction efficiency while enhancing the resilience of the financial sector,” he explained.
Both leaders also committed to strengthening cooperation in energy security, health, and culture.
President Prabowo Subianto further welcomed efforts to restore and conserve the Prambanan Temple compounds, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
“We have also designated 2026–2027 period as the ‘Tagore–Dewantara Year’ for Indonesia–India cultural and educational diplomacy,” he declared.
In the education sector, President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Modi supported the establishment of a campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and the exploration of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) presence in Indonesia.
Both leaders also supported efforts to increase the number of Indonesian students studying in India.
“These initiatives reflect the long-standing civilizational ties between Indonesia and India. At the same time, we remain committed to strengthening cooperation in education, research and technology, culture, and people-to-people exchanges,” concluded the President.
The bilateral meeting resulted in a series of strategic commitments that further solidify the positions of Indonesia and India as key partners in the Indo-Pacific region while opening up broader opportunities for cooperation in advancing the progress and prosperity of both nations.
