President Prabowo Subianto Emphasizes Energy Self-Sufficiency to Strengthen National Resilience

President Prabowo Subianto has once again emphasized the importance of achieving energy self-sufficiency by optimizing Indonesia’s domestic strengths and resources.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said in a written statement that this effort aims to reduce dependence on foreign energy supplies while strengthening national economic resilience.

The President made the statement while chairing a meeting of the National Energy Council (DEN), attended by several ministers of the Red and White Cabinet and DEN members at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Thursday afternoon (09/17).

“National energy independence must be built upon Indonesia’s own strengths and resources. President Prabowo Subianto emphasized the importance of achieving energy self-sufficiency and reducing dependence on foreign energy supplies,” the Cabinet Secretary said in his written statement.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, the meeting was part of the DEN’s regular agenda and was chaired directly by the President in his capacity as Chair of the DEN.

During the meeting, the Government also discussed several concrete measures to accelerate the achievement of national energy independence, Teddy added.

Quoting Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources and Acting Chair of DEN Bahlil Lahadalia, the Cabinet Secretary said that one of the measures discussed was accelerating the development of domestic energy sources, including palm oil, corn, cassava, sugarcane, coal, geothermal energy, and solar energy.

The Government, Teddy added, also encouraged the development of B50 and E50 to reduce reliance on fuel imports. At the same time, the Government also continues to strengthen renewable-energy development, including by accelerating solar power projects with a target capacity of up to 100-gigawatt peak (GWp) within three years.

Another measure focuses on increasing national oil production.

To that end, Teddy said the Government will optimize existing oil fields and wells while accelerating exploration activities to strengthen domestic energy production capacity.

The DEN meeting also discussed follow-up measures for the planned construction of nuclear power plants. The plan will be implemented in line with government-prepared studies and stages as part of efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s national energy mix.

To ensure that the entire agenda moves forward in a focused manner, the Government will also formulate a comprehensive and measurable energy roadmap. The roadmap will include annual targets, investment requirements, implementation timelines, and a clear division of responsibilities.

The Cabinet Secretary also conveyed the President’s view that energy independence is not only about meeting domestic energy needs, but is also strategically important for strengthening the economy and Indonesia’s ability to respond to global dynamics.

“The President emphasized that energy independence is not merely about meeting domestic energy needs, but also a vital component of strengthening economic resilience and giving Indonesia greater latitude to determine its development trajectory amid global geopolitical dynamics,” the Cabinet Secretary stated.
