Europe has played a pivotal role in shaping global civilization and championing fundamental values such as democracy and human rights, President Prabowo Subianto has said.

The President made the statement after delivering a joint press statement with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at Berlaymont Building of the European Union’s Headquarters in the Belgian capital of Brussels, Sunday (07/13)

“I think the United States will always be a very important leader in the world, but I consider Europe to also be a very important factor in world civilization. In history, Europe is at the leading edge of many, many sciences, technologies, etc., and Europe is always leading the world in upholding democratic values, human rights,” the President responded to an international journalist’s question about his view on Europe’s and the United States’ roles as a global power leader.

“We consider Europe [to] still [be] a very important factor, and we would like to see a very strong Europe. This is part of the world architecture of, let us say, multipolar powers that will contribute to peace and stability,” he added.

The Head of State emphasized that addressing global challenges, such as the climate crisis and environmental impact of industrialization, requires the leadership of strong global powers, underscoring the urgent need for collaboration to safeguard an increasingly interconnected future.

“Because the world, the planet is getting smaller. Everything is now interconnected, and climate change is a fact of life. [The] environmental impact of industrialization is a fact of life, so as the planet is getting smaller, we need strong powers that contribute to peace and stability, and we consider Europe to be very important,” he remarked.

The President’s statement also reaffirms Indonesia’s commitment to fostering inclusive and fair global cooperation, highlighting Europe as a key partner in upholding a peaceful, just, and sustainable world order. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (DH/EP)
