President Prabowo Subianto Friday (07/31) stated that Indonesia’s success in achieving food self-sufficiency has become an important asset for the country as it faces today’s geopolitical situation.

“This is the most fundamental issue. Those of you who have known me for a long time will be aware that I often speak about food for the people. This is a lesson drawn from thousands of years of history. Alhamdulillah, we have achieved food self-sufficiency in a relatively short period,” the President said during a meeting with central and regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) business leaders from across Indonesia at the State Palace in Central Jakarta.

The Head of State also noted the achievement was the result of the Indonesian people’s long struggle. He also expressed confidence that, with food self-sufficiency secured, Indonesia will be able to withstand global dynamics and uncertainty.

“This is what strengthens our confidence. We are certain we can ensure food availability for the Indonesian people under any circumstances,” he said.

The President also highlighted a range of ongoing global conflicts, from the war in Ukraine to tensions in the ASEAN region, noting that these developments have affected Indonesia, including the stability of food and energy prices.

“The war in Ukraine may last longer than the Second World War. Millions of casualties have already occurred and we are only now realizing that a conflict in one part of the world can have far-reaching impacts, including food prices, fuel prices, and so on,” he said.

Achieving food self-sufficiency is a critical foundation for Indonesia in navigating global uncertainty, while also reflecting the Government’s commitment to maintaining national stability and ensuring the fulfillment of the people’s food needs. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (GWH/EP)
