President Prabowo Subianto Monday (05/26) joined the Plenary Session of the 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, Malaysia, which was officially opened by Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim. The presence of President Prabowo in the session reflected Indonesia’s strong commitment to ASEAN regional integrity and centrality.

“With great honor, I hereby declare the 46th ASEAN Summit officially open,” PM Anwar Ibrahim said.

In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Ibrahim said that this year marks a decade of the establishment of ASEAN community. He also underscored the importance of putting ASEAN centrality as the main principle in regional cooperation and expressed appreciation to the spirit of brotherhood among ASEAN member countries that allows ASEAN to unite in facing challenges, including unilateral tariffs imposed by the United States.

In addition, the Prime Minister expressed his optimism for ASEAN resilience towards various crises. He also highlighted the need to strengthen external partnership including through the first ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.

“We must safeguard the multilateral system and ensure that the ASEAN-GCC-China geo-economic model continues to play a meaningful role in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future for our region and our peoples,” he concluded.

During the plenary session, the ASEAN leaders discussed ASEAN community development, ASEAN external relations, and key priorities for the future.
