President Prabowo Subianto Tuesday (07/29) received Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, for the Indonesia-Malaysia annual consultation.

The meeting marked an important milestone after the last annual consultation in Kuching in the Malaysian state of Sarawak back in 2017.

Following the consultation, Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono stated that the consultation is essential for updating various strategic issues and strengthening relations between the two leaders.

“I believe it is important to ensure various issues and updates are communicated continuously. This mechanism also helps foster relations between the two leaders,” the Minister said.

For the record, the annual consultation was conducted bilaterally and covered several strategic issues.

Sugino added that the discussions focused on developments in bilateral relations, regional dynamics in Southeast Asia, and global issues of mutual concern.

“The two leaders also discussed the progress we have made recently, including border negotiations and the significant decline in incidents of fishermen being detained in each other’s waters, issues that have previously been a source of tension between Indonesia and Malaysia,” he said, adding that the meeting was held in a warm and cordial atmosphere.

During the consultation, the Minister added, President Prabowo Subianto also pushed for stronger cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia for the welfare of the people in the two neighboring countries.

“We share common roots, culture, and language. Therefore, friendship between Indonesia and Malaysia must remain exceptionally strong,” Sugiono concluded. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (FI/EP)
